I would like to nominate my wife of 27 years, Marla Schaap. Her life is marked by a pattern of striving to make a difference in the lives of those she encounters. In fact, we met in the late 80’s because I volunteered to help out with a clothing drive she started as was coordinating for area migrant families. Over the years she has been involved in too many ways to recount – Sunday school, church volunteering, school classroom and PTA volunteering, and so much more. Raising two wonderful daughters, making their friends at all ages and stages feel welcome in our home, and making me a better man as her husband, Marla makes the world a better place.Even though she battles ongoing health issues, Marla continues to reach out beyond herself. These days she serves as a substitute school teacher in the public school system and is one of those teachers that truly cares about the children and makes a difference with words of affirmation or encouragement. We host a weekly Bible study for young adults and she is committed to providing dinner each week in order to make it easier for the people to attend. Last night we were getting a bite to eat and she offered some of her meal to the homeless man sitting outside the restaurant. Although she wouldn’t agree, Marla is worthy to be recognized because she truly is leaving wherever she is better than she found it!
